Quick Answer

Sales tax in Canada ranges from 5% in Alberta and the territories to 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and PEI. Ontario charges 13% HST, Nova Scotia 14% (cut from 15% on April 1, 2025), and Quebec 14.975% (5% GST plus 9.975% QST). On a $100.00 purchase, the tax is $5.00 in Alberta, $13.00 in Ontario and $15.00 in PEI. To work backwards from a total, divide by 1 plus the rate.

Adding and removing tax

Adding tax: multiply the price by the combined rate. In Ontario, $100.00 × 13% = $13.00 of HST, for a total of $113.00.

Removing tax: divide the total by 1 plus the rate. A $113.00 Ontario receipt is $100.00 before tax. This is the calculation businesses need for expense claims and input tax credits, and the one most people get wrong by subtracting 13% from the total instead, which gives $98.31.

The three kinds of sales tax

  • GST — the 5% federal tax, charged everywhere.
  • HST — a single blended tax replacing GST and provincial tax in Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and PEI. It's administered federally, so one rate covers both.
  • PST, RST and QST — separate provincial taxes in British Columbia (PST), Saskatchewan (PST), Manitoba (RST) and Quebec (QST), charged alongside GST with their own rules on what's taxable.

Details worth knowing

  • Nova Scotia cut the provincial part of its HST to 9% on April 1, 2025, taking the rate from 15% to 14%.
  • Quebec stopped compounding QST on GST in 2013. The combined rate is 14.975%, not 15.24%.
  • Ontario also charges retail sales tax on insurance premiums and private used-vehicle sales, which this calculator doesn't cover.
  • Basic groceries, most prescription drugs and many medical devices are zero-rated nationally, so no GST or HST applies. Provinces also exempt different items from their own tax, such as children's clothing in some provinces.
  • The rate follows the customer for most goods shipped between provinces: a business ships to Ontario and charges 13%, not the rate where it's located.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much sales tax do I pay in each province?

Rates run from 5% in Alberta and the territories to 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and PEI. Ontario charges 13% HST, Nova Scotia 14%, Quebec 14.975% (5% GST plus 9.975% QST), British Columbia and Manitoba 12%, and Saskatchewan 11%. On a $100.00 purchase that's a difference of $10.00 between Alberta and PEI.

How do I calculate the price before tax?

Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate. At 13% in Ontario, a $113.00 total means $100.00 before tax and $13.00 of HST. Switch this calculator to "remove tax" and it does the reverse calculation for you, which is what you need when a receipt only shows the total.

Is QST charged on top of GST in Quebec?

Not since 2013. QST is calculated on the price before GST, so the two taxes sit side by side rather than compounding. The combined rate is 14.975%, which is why a $100 purchase in Quebec costs $114.98 rather than $115.24.

What is the difference between GST, HST and PST?

GST is the 5% federal tax. HST is a single blended tax that replaces both GST and the provincial tax in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces, administered federally. PST (called RST in Manitoba and QST in Quebec) is a separate provincial tax charged on top of GST, with its own rules about what is taxable.

Which province has no sales tax?

Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon have no provincial sales tax, so only the 5% GST applies. Alberta is the only province in that group; the other three are territories.
