Editorial Policy

Last updated: September 14, 2026

This page explains how LoanLens produces and maintains its calculators and guides, so you can judge how much weight to give them. Nothing here changes the fact that our content is general information, not advice. See the Disclaimer.

How content is created

  • Sources. We base rules and figures on official Canadian sources wherever possible: the Canada Revenue Agency, Employment and Social Development Canada, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada, CMHC, OSFI, the Bank of Canada, Statistics Canada, provincial governments, and similar bodies. Many pages list the official sources for their topic under "Official sources".
  • Tools. We use software tools, including AI writing and research tools, to help draft, edit and check content and code. Key figures such as tax rates, contribution limits and benefit amounts are checked against official sources before we publish or update them.
  • Byline. Guides are published under the pen name Jordan Ellis, which represents the LoanLens editorial team rather than an individual person.
  • Plain language. We write for readers who aren't finance professionals, explain jargon, and point out when the right answer depends on personal circumstances.

Calculators

  • Calculators use standard financial formulas (for example, fixed-rate amortization with semi-annual compounding for Canadian mortgages) and explain their main assumptions on the page.
  • Results are estimates for planning. They leave out factors that can matter for you, such as lender-specific fees, credits and your full tax situation.
  • Tax calculators apply the published federal and provincial rates for the tax year shown on the page.

Dates and updates

  • Guides show when they were published and, when they have been checked and revised, a "Reviewed" date.
  • Rules and amounts change. We aim to update affected pages when official figures change, especially at the start of each tax year, but we can't guarantee every page is current at all times. Always confirm figures with the official source before acting.

Independence and advertising

LoanLens is supported by display advertising. Advertisers do not choose our topics or influence calculator results. We don't accept payment for coverage, and we don't currently use affiliate links; if we ever publish sponsored content or affiliate links, they will be clearly labelled.

Corrections

If you spot an error, email info@loanlens.ca with the page address and what looks wrong, ideally with a link to the official source. We review reports and correct confirmed errors. We can't reply to every message or give individual advice.
